Vitrified clay pipe was the standard residential sewer material in the United States from roughly the early 1900s through the late 1970s. PVC took over in the 1980s. Two access pits at either end of the line replace what would otherwise be a full trench. The new pipe is rated for 100+ years.
When the line is collapsed, severely bellied, or shifted out of alignment, there's no trenchless workaround. The pipe has to be dug up and replaced. This is the most disruptive option and the most expensive once you factor in restoration of driveways, walkways, gardens, and lawns. It is also the right answer when nothing else will work.

The cheapest method on paper isn't always the cheapest method in practice. Traditional excavation looks lower per foot until you add the cost of replacing the brick walkway, the mature azaleas, or the original cedar fence that the trench had to cut through. Trenchless methods often come out ahead on total project cost, even when the per-foot pipe rate is higher.
